Stranger Things’ Noah Schnapp Gives RAW Interview
RAW: How’d you get into acting? You’re only 12-years-old now!
NOAH: I took acting classes when I was 6-years-old just for fun until I was 8-years-old. The teacher was like, “You should do this professionally.” I didn’t understand what that was, I just thought it was harder acting classes or something. So then I got into it, and I remember one of my first auditions was for this educational audio book in Kentucky or something. I kept doing it and I really enjoyed it!
RAW: So you were booking things from the start!
NOAH: Well yeah, I remember going into the city four times a week for like Chase Bank and McDonald's commercials. Then I started getting movie auditions, and I remember my first movie was with (Steven) Spielberg and Tom Hanks, which was pretty cool. They taught me all the basics and I just kept going.I remember auditioning for Stranger Things--it was called Montauk when we did it--and I had a horrible headache. It was raining, I was all wet and my ankles were full of mud. I got there and I was so tired. “Ugh, please let this be over with,” I thought and then I got home and I was like, “Oh that wasn’t that good. I should’ve done better.” Then I got a callback and it ended up being my first T.V. show.
RAW: What did you think of the first script of Stranger Things? Did you think it could be the best show ever?
NOAH: No. (laughs) I just remember reading it and it was just kind of this idea. No one ever thought it was going to do really well and become a big show. It was just like, “Okay, we’ll do this. It’ll be a one season thing and few people will watch it.” Because there weren’t any billboards or advertising!
RAW: How did you juggle school and filming?
NOAH: It’s hard on set because you’re filming and balancing school at the same time, but I just get all my work from school and the teachers send me the curriculum. My teachers on set work off that until I get home, and then I go back to their curriculum.
RAW: Do you feel any kind of pressure at such a young age? Do you feel overwhelmed at times?
NOAH: It’s definitely overwhelming, but if I started to not enjoy it, then I would just stop. It’s not like a job, like I need a job. I’m just doing it for fun and then if I don’t like it, I’ll stop.
RAW: Your Instagram bio says “travel addict.” Talk about some places you’ve been.
NOAH: I was supposed to just go to Manila, Philippines because there was this AsiaPOP (Comic-Con) and we got to meet a bunch of fans. And then on the flight to Manila, there was a stop in Tokyo and we were like, we’d never been there, so why not just leave earlier and take a day there to see everything? So we went to Tokyo for a day and a half. It’s so different, it’s awesome! We went from the airport straight into Tokyo, which is so clean, organized and I just love it there. And all the stuff they wear! My dad and I went on this street and it was like a bunch of pink storefronts and school girls walking around. Then we went to this one place and we saw owls. There was just so much!
RAW: What’s one place that you might want to travel to next that you haven’t yet?
NOAH: France. My family is Canadian but my mom lived in France for a little bit and it just looks so cool. I’ve never been there and I don’t really know what to expect, but I love the idea of waking up and going to get a baguette!
RAW: They have French language, obviously. It’s like the language of love...Can we talk about your love life a little bit? Are you currently in a relationship?
NOAH: (pauses) I’m not! But uh, (laughs) yeah, I mean there’s nothing to say (laughs), I’m not!
RAW: Since you’re single and you have a bunch of fans that probably adore you, how are your DMs on Instagram? Are they absolutely insane?
NOAH: Oh, my DMs? There’s a bunch of group chats of fans. I sometimes peep in and talk to them a little bit. And it’s fun getting to talk to them.
RAW: Is there a chance that you would ever date a fan?
NOAH: Date a fan? Uh, I mean, I don’t know! I guess?
RAW: Give one piece of wisdom to your fans that you’ve learned along your path of life so far.
NOAH: Well with just this business, this whole acting thing, it’s so competitive and there’s like such a small chance of making it. I’m very lucky that I got to be on this big show, and I just think if you push past that 99% who give up at a point, you will have a chance at making it and going somewhere. So just keep pushing and never give up. It’s very corny “never give up”, but it’s just a great quote that I always follow.
RAW: If there was one thing in this life you could be remembered for, what would that one thing be and why?
NOAH: A nice, funny person. A kind person who’s giving. ᴿᴬᵂ
