Madison Beer Gives RAW Interview, Talks Brooklyn Beckham & Justin Bieber
RAW: What was it like growing up in Long Island, NY?
MADISON: It was cool because I had my friends who I’ve been friends with my entire life, but it’s kind of boring there. There’s nothing really to do.
RAW: Who’s the most famous person to come out of Long Island?
MADISON: Natalie Portman, I think!
RAW: What was the first song you heard that made you think, “I want to be a singer”?
MADISON: (laughs) It honestly sounds so random but “Hot in Herre” (by Nelly) is one of the first songs I ever was like, “This is a dope song. I want to make music.” I also used to jam to any Britney Spears song like “Hit Me Baby One More Time”.
RAW: Do you have a favorite place to write music?
MADISON: My bedroom with my keyboard with the lights off and my candles on.
RAW: What is one music artist that fans wouldn’t expect you draw inspiration from?
MADISON: Daft Punk. I love Daft Punk so much.
RAW: We saw you tweeted about your grandfather's boyfriend of 20 years recently passed away...
MADISON: I was just talking about it yesterday with London Pride. My grandfather's gay and he’s never come out. He lived his whole life in fear, scared of what people would think because it was so unaccepted back then by everyone. And it was obviously illegal. So I was just saying how beautiful it is that times are really changing and even though there’s still people out there that are ignorant and are against people loving who they want to love, it’s awesome to see so many people come together in a city no matter where in the world it is.
RAW: Could you tell us what happened to your tongue after watching A Christmas Story?
MADISON: (laughs) I was like five or six, and I was left home alone with my nanny and my parents were out to eat dinner. I watched A Christmas Story and there’s a scene where the kid sticks his tongue to the pole and they can’t get it off, and for whatever possessed me to think, “Oh my God, I should do that.” I went to my freezer. I literally can see the picture perfectly and I hope this refrigerator is burning in hell right now. It’s the worst refrigerator ever! (laughs) It was just a little ice box, it was freezing, I went and stuck my tongue to it--like to the point where I literally couldn’t get it off. And I started screaming for the housekeeper. She came upstairs and she thought that I got electrocuted. (laughs) I don’t know why she thought I got electrocuted, and she grabbed me and pulled me off, and I’m not joking, it’s disgusting. Like, layers of my tongue came off and I was gushing blood, so much blood that it was insane and it was so bad. I really don’t recommend sticking your tongue to a freezer anytime soon. 1/10 literally.
RAW: What are your favorite movies?
MADISON: Fight Club, Shutter Island, and Bora Bora.
RAW: Any favorite books?
MADISON: "The Giving Tree" just because it’s such a beautiful message and no matter how old you are, it’s still such a beautiful book. The poetry book “Milk and Honey” (by Rupi Kaur) is awesome.
RAW: Who are some of your all-time favorite musicians and why?
MADISON: The Beatles because all their music is really different and they started their own wave. I’m obsessed with Marty Wilde right now who was really popular in the 50’s. He did a cover of “Teenager in Love” (by Dion and the Belmonts). I actually posted it on my Instagram the other day and I’m kind of in love with him even though he’s like 80 now. (laughs) But I love Sam Cooke, just like kind of older music is more of my vibe.
RAW: Are there any new artists that inspire you as well? Or is it more of the older generation?
MADISON: Yeah, this guy D.A. Wallach. He’s literally like a new Beatles. If you’re (reading) this, please look up the song Glowing by D.A. Wallach. It’s so beautiful and the lyrics are amazing, it will make you cry. Also, I love Melanie Martinez.
RAW: When was the last time you were in the booth?
MADISON: Two days ago. Lots is cookin’. We got a whole pie cookin’! Not just a piece. (laughs)
RAW: Where do you see yourself in ten years?
MADISON: With Grammys on a shelf, sold out stadiums and accomplished my dreams.
RAW: Describe your fashion style.
MADISON: Comfy and honestly, I see boys out at a club or dinner and literally go, “That’s what I’m wearing tomorrow.” Guys--I literally get inspiration from them. I follow Shia Labeouf's outfit page on Instagram. I love his style. I literally want to dress like Shia Labeouf (laughs).
RAW: Who was your first celebrity crush?
MADISON: Taylor Lautner or David Archuleta. I was in love with David Archuleta.
RAW: What is a perfect place to take a first date?
MADISON: If you live in California, Mulholland Drive. I love talking to people on views and just vibing. I love just talking to someone. I don’t like when someone’s loud that we really can’t get to know each other. I like when I go somewhere with a guy and I’m just able to talk and vibe and and have fun… and cry a little bit. The whole nine yards.
RAW: Can you do any celebrity impression?
MADISON: Oh God, don’t put me on the spot! I say I can do Ariana, but I actually once did an Ariana impression and got roasted in the comments. Everyone was like, “That was so bad.” Well, okay, I’m never doing an Ariana Grande impression ever again! You guys can look it up, it’s embarrassing though--don’t do it. (laughs) ᴿᴬᵂ
