Chosen Jacobs Gives RAW Interview, Talks ‘IT’ & Nutella In His Ear
RAW: How did you get into the entertainment industry and book such a major film like It?
CHOSEN: I started off doing music, and I’ve always loved that. The goal of a singer is to make people feel something. Acting is kind of the same thing, so my mom put me in some theater here and there, some classes. I’ve been blessed to be able to book something awesome like It and Hawaii Five-0 and it’s just been a great experience. So, now I’m here interviewing with you, the best interviewer in the world. (smiles)
RAW: Talk about your first call back.
CHOSEN: I think I was thirteen. The first job I ever booked was a commercial for Hot Wheels and I was super excited. I was like, “Wow, I can actually do this!”
RAW: Do you prefer music or acting?
CHOSEN: You know, I’m glad I can do both. They kind of play off each other. The better I become as an actor, the better I become as a performer, and it just plays off both. I’m actually working on [new music] right now. I’ve been in the studio! Lyrically, it’s more R&B-ish pop-py, but the actual instrumentation of it has more of a older hip-hop feel.
RAW: Who or what inspired you to become an actor?
CHOSEN: I have two actually! My first one was Leonardo DiCaprio in The Great Gatsby. I loved because I already wanted to act before that just because of his previous films, but I remember there’s like a moment in the film that made me obsessed. The first party he ever throws and they finally meet up and he does this look and he’s just like, “I’m Gatsby,” and he goes like (impersonates Gatsby’s stare) And I was like, “Oh shoot!!” He just looks like the dude and I was like “wow” he just made me feel some type of way by that one look that he gave. So I was like, I want to make people feel that way. So hopefully we can do that with It. Second one was Denzel (Washington). Training Day is my movie. Denzel, you’re so awesome. I aspire to have a career like you.
RAW: Is there anyone that you look up to musically?
CHOSEN: Biggest inspiration would be Michael Jackson, but currently my favorite is Bruno Mars. He’s one of the best performers of our time right now. I look up to his ability as a performer. Best Superbowl ever, in my opinion.
RAW: Ever since you started acting, has your friend group changed at all?
CHOSEN: It stayed pretty much the same outside of the cast, which is just cool. The cast is like, “Ah, we’re on the same page!”
RAW: You have the coolest cast!
CHOSEN: It was like the best summer of my life doing that film. We hung out in each others’ rooms pranking each other. We’d stay up till like 3 A.M. and they said whoever falls asleep first gets pranked and you can’t complain about it when you wake up. I’m not a punk, so I was like, “Okay, I’m not gonna go to sleep.” I went to sleep and I wake up and there’s Nutella in my ear. At first, it’s just like, “Aw yeah, you got me,” but then I’m like, “I can’t get this out! Can’t get this out!” So I start running around Wyatt’s apartment, getting Nutella all over the floor, and then I jumped in the shower with my clothes on and I'm like, “Oh my God, Wyatt, I can’t get this out!”
RAW: Who was the most crazy person out of the cast?
CHOSEN: Jack (Dylan Grazer) was the most lit, intense, awesome, person ever. He has the ability to talk really fast which is crazy how he can do it. He’s like the guy who does those infomercials after a drug and they be like (talks fast) “this can give you issues a-da-da-da”. Jack would be perfect for that! He can just spit out words.
RAW: Let’s talk about your character, Mike Hanlon. Are you similar to him?
CHOSEN: We’re somewhat similar. I always say Mike is the best friend you could ever have. You could have certain differences that all of us in the Losers’ Club have, we’re kind of ostracized from the community, so you know, finding friends that accept him for who he is means a lot to him. So he would never betray that friendship, and I feel like I’m kind of that way or at least I try to be.
RAW: So you’re like the best friend ever as well?
CHOSEN: I try to be, but Mike Hanlon’s on a totally different level. He’s like the dude. Like he’s looking for a Patrick to his Spongebob. That’s how awesome he is.
RAW: Everyone [in the Losers’ Club] is Patrick?
CHOSEN: Yes, everyone’s Patrick.
RAW: How did you get your name Chosen?
CHOSEN: Well, my dad was out in the Chinatown of Atlanta and he just heard an Asian couple talking and then the baby said something that sounded like “chosen.” I don’t know if he just heard it or if that’s what he wanted to hear, but that’s how I got my name. He’s like, “We’re going to name him Chosen”. And I agree with it!
RAW: Do people call you “The Chosen One”?
CHOSEN: Most of the time, I tell people my name’s Chosen, they think I said Joseph. But then I tell them it’s Chosen and they’re like, (laughs) “Like the chosen one!” and I be like, “Yeah!” But you know, whenever I get in trouble with my mom, she be like, “Act like the chosen child I chose you to be!” And I be like, “Yes, ma’am...”ᴿᴬᵂ
